Ingredients

  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 c. shortening
  • 1/4 c. vinegar
  • 3/4 c. milk
  • 1 c. crisp rice cereal, crushed
  • 1 tsp. salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and additional salt together.
  3. Blend in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  4. Add vinegar and 1/2 cup milk all at once, stirring only to combine.
  5. Turn out onto a lightly floured board.
  6. Knead gently 5 or 6 times.
  7. Divide dough into 16 equal parts.
  8. Roll each part into a 6-inch cylinder using the palm of your hand.
  9. Brush each with remaining milk.
  10. Combine crushed cereal, salt, and caraway or poppy seed.
  11. Roll each dough cylinder in the cereal mixture to coat.
  12. Place on a baking sheet.
  13. Bake for 15 minutes.
