Ingredients

  • 1 cup lukewarm buttermilk
  • 1 package yeast
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon soda
  • 2 1/2 cups self-rising flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in lukewarm buttermilk.
  2. Sift self-rising flour and sugar; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Mix and knead the dough until smooth.
  4. Roll out into 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into biscuit shapes and brush with melted butter.
  5. Place one biscuit on top of the other and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Bake at 395°F (200°C) for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
