Ingredients

  • frozen filo dough, thawed
  • 4 c. chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 lb. unsalted butter
  • 1/2 lb. unsalted margarine

Instructions

  1. Mix finely chopped nuts with sugar.
  2. Slowly melt butter and margarine together and allow to slowly boil over low heat for 5 minutes without stirring.
  3. Lay out the first layer of filo dough on a baking sheet and spread about 3 teaspoons of melted butter on it.
  4. Sprinkle with the nut and sugar mixture.
  5. Repeat the process with the second and third layers of filo, butter, and nuts.
  6. Roll the layered filo lengthwise on a dowel or stick to form a log.
  7. Squeeze the ends together to seal and carefully remove the stick.
  8. Bake on a cookie sheet at 350°F (175°C) until slightly browned, about 15 minutes.
  9. Allow to cool, then cut diagonally and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Tips & Substitutions

For optimal texture, ensure your filo dough is fully thawed before use. If you want to reduce fat, substitute half of the butter or margarine with unsweetened applesauce. Using a mix of walnuts and pecans adds a delightful depth to the flavor. Keep an eye on the baking time, as ovens vary; the paklava should be golden but not overly browned.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the paklava dusted with powdered sugar for a sweet finish. It pairs beautifully with a cup of strong coffee or tea. For a more festive touch, consider serving alongside Sandy's Kiflees as a delightful dessert platter or as part of a Mediterranean recipes spread.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover paklava in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you want to keep them longer, refrigerate for up to a week. To reheat, place them in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes to restore their crispiness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of nut in the paklava?

Yes, you can substitute the walnuts or pecans with almonds or pistachios if desired. Each nut will impart a unique flavor to the dish, so feel free to experiment according to your taste preference.

Is it necessary to use both butter and margarine?

While the combination of butter and margarine gives a richer flavor and texture, you can use all butter or all margarine if you prefer. Just keep in mind that using all butter will enhance the taste.

How can I tell when the paklava is done baking?

The paklava is ready when it turns a light golden brown color on top. It should also feel firm to the touch. Avoid overbaking as it can become dry; check it a few minutes before the suggested baking time.
