Ingredients

  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 c. shortening, melted
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 4 1/2 c. plain flour

Instructions

  1. Scald the buttermilk and allow it to cool to lukewarm.
  2. Add sugar, salt, soda, and melted shortening to the buttermilk.
  3. Stir in yeast after the mixture cools to lukewarm temperature.
  4. Add flour gradually and knead to form a soft dough.
  5. Let the dough rise until doubled in bulk if used immediately; otherwise, place in the icebox for later use.
  6. Shape the dough into rolls or a loaf as desired.
  7. Bake the rolls in a moderate oven until golden brown.
