Rusty's Apple Pie combines sweet-tart McIntosh apples with cheddar cheese and molasses for a rich, flavorful dessert that balances fruity, cheesy, and caramel notes, perfect for gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 10 large McIntosh apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • plain pastry
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/3 pound Cheddar cheese, cut in 3/4-inch cubes
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup molasses

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them; set aside.
  2. Make pastry, roll out the bottom crust, and line a 10-inch pie pan.
  3. Mix sugar with flour, and sprinkle 3 tablespoons of this mixture over the bottom pie crust.
  4. Add half the sliced apples, a layer of cheddar cheese cubes, half the remaining sugar/flour mixture, and the remaining apples.
  5. Dot with melted butter, add the remaining sugar/flour mixture, and pour molasses over the top.
  6. Dampen the pie crust around the rim.
  7. Roll out the top crust and place it over the filled pie.
  8. Trim both crusts to 1 inch over the rim, tuck under, and flute the edges.
  9. Cut vents in the top crust and bake at 400°F for 50 to 60 minutes.
