Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb. rutabaga, peeled and cubed
  • 4 medium tart apples, peeled, cored, and cubed or sliced
  • 6 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • salt

Instructions

  1. In a covered saucepan, boil the peeled and cubed rutabaga in salted water for about 20 minutes.
  2. Drain the rutabaga well.
  3. Rub the sides of a 2-quart casserole dish with butter or margarine.
  4. Place half of the drained rutabaga and half of the peeled and cored apples in the casserole.
  5. Sprinkle with half of the brown sugar and a dash of salt.
  6. Repeat the layers with the remaining rutabaga and apples, ending with brown sugar and butter on top.
  7. Cover the casserole and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes.

Tips & Substitutions

For enhanced flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon to the layers of apples. If rutabaga is not available, you can substitute with turnips for a similar texture. Ensure the apples are tart, as their acidity balances the sweetness of the rutabaga. For a richer dish, use ghee in place of butter.

Serving Suggestions

This dish pairs beautifully with roasted meats or as a comforting side on a holiday table. Consider serving it alongside Herbed Peas for a colorful plate. A dollop of sour cream on top can add a creamy contrast. For a complete meal, enjoy it with crusty Zwieback(German Rolls).

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place in a covered dish in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes until warmed through. You can also microwave individual portions for quicker reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this dish ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the casserole in advance and refrigerate it unbaked. Just cover it tightly with foil. When ready to serve, bake it straight from the fridge, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.

What type of apples work best for this recipe?

Tart apples, such as Granny Smith or Braeburn, are ideal for this dish as they provide a nice contrast to the sweetness of the rutabaga. Avoid overly sweet varieties like Red Delicious, as they may make the dish too sweet.

Can I add other vegetables to this recipe?

Absolutely! You can incorporate carrots or parsnips for added sweetness and color. Just make sure to adjust the cooking time for any additional ingredients to ensure everything is tender and cooked through.
