A hearty, savory cabbage dish with crispy bacon, seasoned with onion and a touch of hot red pepper, perfect for comforting family meals or gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 cups cabbage, chopped or shredded
  • 5 or 6 strips bacon
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • small amount of red (hot) pepper (if desired)

Instructions

  1. Fry bacon until crisp; set aside.
  2. In a large frying pan, put cabbage, onion, water, and bacon drippings.
  3. Cover and cook for 30 minutes or until as done as you like it, but cook until mushy.
  4. Add the sugar, salt, pepper, and red pepper.
  5. Cook a little longer, 5 or 6 minutes.
  6. Add the crumbled bacon to the cabbage for added flavor.
