Shoo-Fly Bake is a classic Pennsylvania Dutch dessert with a sweet, molasses flavor and a crunchy crumb topping, perfect for cozy family gatherings or holiday celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup Brer Rabbit dark molasses

Instructions

  1. Mix by hand the flour, sugar, salt, and shortening until crumbly.
  2. Reserve 1 1/2 cups of crumbs for topping.
  3. Add ginger, cloves, and cinnamon to the remaining mixture.
  4. Dissolve the soda in the warm water.
  5. Add the water mixture to the flour mixture and beat until smooth.
  6. Stir in the molasses until well combined.
  7. Pour the batter into a greased 13 x 9-inch pan.
  8. Sprinkle the reserved crumbs on top of the batter.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour or until set and golden.
