Ingredients

  • 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 3 tablespoons cold water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Sift the flour before measuring.
  2. Combine the sifted flour and salt in a mixing bowl.
  3. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture is fairly coarse.
  4. Sprinkle the mixture with cold water, a tablespoon at a time, and toss with a fork after each addition.
  5. Work the dough into a firm ball with your hands.
  6. Roll out the dough to double thickness and fit into a pie pan.
  7. Fold the edges under to create a double thickness around the rim and flute with fingers or a fork.
  8. Prick the crust with a fork and bake in a preheated 400°F oven for 10 minutes or until lightly browned.
