Ingredients

  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2/3 c. milk

Instructions

  1. Sift flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cream of tartar into a bowl.
  2. Add the shortening to the flour mixture and blend until it resembles cornmeal.
  3. Pour milk into the flour mixture slowly.
  4. Add the beaten egg.
  5. Stir until a stiff dough forms.
  6. Knead the dough five times.
  7. Roll the dough to 1/2-inch thickness.
  8. Cut out biscuits with a 1 1/2-inch cutter.
  9. Bake on an aluminum cookie sheet for 10 to 15 minutes at 450°F.
