Ingredients

  • 1 cake firm tofu
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped onions
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh Italian parsley
  • 1/2 tablespoon dark sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon tamari soy sauce
  • ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 or more garlic cloves minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Press and mash the tofu until smooth.
  3. Mix the mashed tofu with chopped onions, bread crumbs, parsley, dark sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic, cumin, turmeric, lemon juice, black pepper, and vegetable oil in a medium bowl.
  4. Form the mixture into 1-inch balls and place on an oiled baking sheet.
  5. Bake for about 30 minutes, turning occasionally until the falafel are golden and crusty on the outside.
  6. Serve in pita pockets with sliced fresh tomato and a yogurt and dill sauce if desired.
