Ingredients

  • 10 slices white bread or leftover bread
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup seedless raisins
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 4 cups milk
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Spread butter on crustless bread and cut each slice into fourths.
  2. Arrange half of the bread in the bottom of a buttered 2-quart casserole.
  3. Sprinkle with raisins and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
  4. Cover with the rest of the bread and cinnamon.
  5. Heat milk just until a film forms over the top.
  6. Add sugar, stirring until dissolved.
  7. Gradually add hot milk mixture to beaten eggs, beating constantly.
  8. Stir in vanilla and pour over the bread.
  9. Set the casserole in a pan containing 1-inch hot water.
  10. Bake at 350°F for 40 to 50 minutes or until a knife comes out clean.
  11. Serve warm or chilled with whipped cream or ice cream.
