Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup scalded milk, cooled
  • 1/4 cup soft shortening
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted

Instructions

  1. Pour the lukewarm water into a mixing bowl.
  2. Dissolve the yeast in the water and stir well.
  3. Add the cooled, scalded milk, soft shortening, and egg to the mixture.
  4. Add the sifted flour, sugar, and salt to the wet ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
  6. Let the dough rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  7. Punch down the dough and shape into rolls.
  8. Place the rolls on a greased baking sheet and let rise again until puffed, about 30 minutes.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
