Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup white Karo syrup
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup mashed potatoes
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. Scald the milk and add shortening, sugar, and salt. Let it cool until lukewarm.
  2. Dissolve the yeast in warm water and add to the milk mixture.
  3. Add the beaten egg, mashed potatoes, and 1/2 cup water to the mixture.
  4. Beat in 4 to 5 cups of flour until the dough is stiff and leaves the sides of the bowl.
  5. Let the dough rise until it triples in bulk.
  6. Roll out the dough about 1/3 inch thick and cut with a doughnut cutter.
  7. Let the cut doughnuts rise on a floured board for 1 hour.
  8. Fry the doughnuts in hot grease until golden brown.
  9. Dip the fried doughnuts in the glaze.
