Instructions
- Scald the milk and add shortening, sugar, and salt. Let it cool until lukewarm.
- Dissolve the yeast in warm water and add to the milk mixture.
- Add the beaten egg, mashed potatoes, and 1/2 cup water to the mixture.
- Beat in 4 to 5 cups of flour until the dough is stiff and leaves the sides of the bowl.
- Let the dough rise until it triples in bulk.
- Roll out the dough about 1/3 inch thick and cut with a doughnut cutter.
- Let the cut doughnuts rise on a floured board for 1 hour.
- Fry the doughnuts in hot grease until golden brown.
- Dip the fried doughnuts in the glaze.
