Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using butter instead of margarine when sautéing the onions and frying the steaks. If you prefer a lighter sauce, substitute the half and half with a non-dairy cream for a vegan version. Fresh thyme can be replaced with dried thyme, but use half the amount since dried herbs are more concentrated. Ensure the skillet is hot enough before adding the steaks for a nice sear.

Serving Suggestions

This dish pairs beautifully with creamy mashed potatoes or a side of steamed asparagus for a balanced meal. A fresh salad, like Aunt Zena'S Three 'P' Salad, can also complement the richness of the sauce. For a wine pairing, consider a Cabernet Sauvignon, which enhances the flavors of the steak.

Storage & Reheating

Leftover steak and mushroom sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, gently warm the dish in a skillet over low heat, adding a splash of water or broth to prevent drying out. Avoid microwaving, as it can toughen the meat and alter the sauce's consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I use instead of filet mignon?

If filet mignon is not available, ribeye or sirloin steaks can be great alternatives. They offer a different flavor profile and texture but will still work well with the mushroom sauce. Just keep in mind that cooking times may vary depending on the cut chosen.

Can I make this dish ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the mushroom sauce ahead of time and store it separately. Just reheat the sauce gently before serving, and cook the steaks fresh to ensure they are juicy and tender. This method allows for a more streamlined dinner preparation on the day of serving.

How do I know when the steaks are done?

To check the doneness of your steaks, use a meat thermometer. For medium-rare, aim for an internal temperature of 130-135°F. If you prefer your steak cooked more, increase the temperature accordingly. Alternatively, you can use the touch method: press the steak with your finger; it should feel slightly firm for medium-rare.
