Ingredients

  • 10 oz. frozen strawberries, thawed
  • 2 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • a few drops red food coloring (optional)
  • 2 slightly beaten eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine, melted
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 4 slices bread, cut into 1/2-inch cubes

Instructions

  1. In a small pan, combine undrained strawberries and cornstarch. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture thickens and bubbles. Stir in food coloring if desired.
  2. Spread the strawberry mixture evenly over the bottom of a 10 x 6 x 2-inch baking dish.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, sugar, melted butter, vanilla extract, and salt.
  4. Add bread cubes to the egg mixture.
  5. Stir to moisten the bread cubes evenly.
  6. Carefully pour the custard mixture over the strawberries in the baking dish.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 50 to 55 minutes until set and golden brown.
  8. Serve warm, optionally with cream.
