Ingredients

  • 2 quarts strawberries
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 1/2 pint whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 3/4 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Wash strawberries. Set a few aside for garnish and slice the rest. Mix with sugar and set aside.
  2. Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and 2 tablespoons sugar. Cut in Crisco until well blended.
  3. Stirring quickly, add enough milk to make a soft dough.
  4. Turn out onto a floured board and shape into two 1/2-inch thick, 7-inch diameter rounds.
  5. Transfer to greased baking sheets and bake for 15 minutes at 400°F.
  6. Place one hot layer on a serving platter and butter it well. Spread with the sweetened strawberries.
  7. Place the second layer on top and cover with whipped cream.
  8. Garnish with whole strawberries and serve by cutting into wedges.
