- Mix the flour, sugar, and powdered alum together in a bowl.
- Slowly stir in 1 cup of cold water until the mixture is smooth.
- Bring the remaining 3 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan.
- Add the dry mixture to the boiling water, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
- Continue cooking in a double boiler for about 30 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat and add 3 drops of oil of cloves.
- Store in a jar and keep moist by adding a small piece of wet sponge on top.
