Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup hot milk
  • 2 cakes yeast
  • 1 cup cool milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 eggs

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in hot milk and set aside.
  2. Add yeast to cool milk and add sugar, cardamom, salt, and eggs.
  3. Combine the two sets of liquids in a large bowl. Add approximately 8 cups of flour.
  4. Knead into a rather stiff dough.
  5. Let the dough stand overnight.
  6. In the morning, divide the dough into 6 pieces.
  7. Roll out each piece into strips, 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
  8. Braid 3 strips together into a loaf.
  9. Set the braided loaf on a greased flat pan or cookie sheet and let it rise lightly for about 1 hour.
  10. Bake at 350°F for about 35 minutes until nicely browned.
  11. Remove from oven and brush the top with sugar melted in a little hot coffee.
  12. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar before serving.
