Ingredients

  • 5 lb. self-rising flour
  • warm water
  • 1/2 cup shortening or oil
  • 8 oz. sour cream
  • 3 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 cup sliced black olives
  • 1 can red beans
  • 1 head shredded lettuce
  • 2 lb. browned hamburger
  • taco seasoning
  • taco sauce

Instructions

  1. Mix enough warm water with the flour to form a kneadable dough, adding oil or shortening as specified.
  2. Let the dough rest for about 2 hours to develop flavor and texture.
  3. Divide the dough into pieces approximately 1/2 cup each, then flatten each piece.
  4. Fry the flattened dough pieces in hot oil at 400°F until golden brown.
  5. Remove from oil and drain excess oil.
  6. Layer cooked, seasoned hamburger, chopped tomatoes, onions, black olives, sour cream, shredded lettuce, red beans, taco sauce, and other desired toppings on the fry bread.
  7. Serve immediately and enjoy the combination of crispy fry bread with flavorful toppings.
