Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3/4 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together.
  3. Chop in butter with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse meal.
  4. Add beaten egg and milk to the dry ingredients.
  5. Stir quickly and lightly until no flour shows and the dough comes together.
  6. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently about 15 times.
  7. Divide the dough in half.
  8. Shape each half into a ball and press each into a round about 1/2 inch thick.
  9. Cut each round into 8 wedges like a pie.
  10. Place the wedges on a greased cookie sheet, spaced apart.
  11. Optional: glaze with lightly beaten egg before baking.
  12. Bake until golden brown, about 12 minutes.
