Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. yellow cornmeal
  • 3/4 c. flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 lb. fresh okra
  • 1 Tbsp. buttermilk or milk
  • 1/3 c. oil

Instructions

  1. In a plastic bag, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cut okra into 1/2-inch slices.
  3. Pour buttermilk or milk over okra and toss to coat.
  4. Place okra in the plastic bag with the seasoned mixture and shake to coat evenly.
  5. In a skillet, heat oil over moderate heat.
  6. Add coated okra to the hot oil.
  7. Fry until crispy and brown, turning frequently.
  8. Drain on paper towels.
  9. Serve immediately.
