- Melt shortening in a 3 or 4-quart saucepan over low heat. Remove and let cool.
- Add sugar and egg; beat well.
- Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves.
- Combine molasses and hot water. Alternately add the molasses mixture and the flour mixture to the first mixture, mixing well after each addition.
- Pour the batter into a greased 9 x 9-inch angel food cake pan.
- Bake at 350°F for 50 to 60 minutes.
- Cool for 5 minutes before removing from the pan.
- Serve with frosting, ice cream, or whipped cream. If frosting is used, sprinkle generously with coconut.
