Turnips Au Gratin

Ingredients

  • 4 c. diced pared turnips
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 1/2 c. milk
  • 3/4 c. shredded Cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Place turnips in boiling water.
  2. Add salt and sugar; cover and cook for 12 minutes.
  3. Drain the turnips.
  4. In a saucepan, melt butter or margarine.
  5. Blend in flour, salt, and pepper; remove from heat.
  6. Gradually blend in milk and return to heat, cooking until thickened.
  7. Add shredded Cheddar cheese to the sauce.
  8. Layer turnips and cheese sauce alternately in a casserole dish.
  9. Sprinkle with bread crumbs on top.
  10. Bake at 350°F for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
