Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons cold water

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, salt, shortening, and butter until it makes a firm dough.
  2. Roll out the dough into 6-inch circles.
  3. Put your favorite filling (e.g., cooked meat, fruit, vegetables) in the middle of each circle.
  4. Brush water halfway around the edge of each circle.
  5. Draw both sides to the center over the filling to seal.
  6. Crimp the edges and brush all over with beaten egg.
  7. Bake on a cookie sheet at 400°F for 25-30 minutes until well browned.
  8. Serve hot or cold. To fry, do not brush with egg, and deep fry for 5-6 minutes.
