- Combine the cake mix, melted butter, and 1/2 cup evaporated milk until well blended.
- Pour three-quarters of the batter into a well-greased 9x13-inch baking pan.
- Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, melt the caramels with 1/3 cup evaporated milk until smooth.
- Pour the caramel mixture over the partially baked cake.
- Sprinkle chocolate chips over the caramel layer.
- Add pecans over the chocolate chips if desired.
- Drop spoonfuls of the remaining batter over the top of the cake.
- Bake at 350°F for an additional 25 minutes until the top is golden and set.
