Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/2 teaspoon butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine sugar, salt, flour, and cornstarch.
  2. If making chocolate filling, add 4 tablespoons cocoa to the dry ingredients.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.
  4. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the egg yolks one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  6. Add the butter and vanilla, stirring until smooth.
  7. Pour filling into a prepared pie crust or serving dish and let cool before serving.
