Virginia's Cabbage Casserole is a comforting dish featuring tender cabbage, creamy mushroom soup, melted American cheese, and a crunchy breadcrumb topping, perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

  • 1 large head cabbage, shredded
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 6 Tbsp margarine
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 8 oz American cheese
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup dry bread crumbs

Instructions

  1. Cook cabbage in boiling salted water until tender; drain thoroughly.
  2. In a large skillet, sauté chopped onion in 5 tablespoons margarine until tender.
  3. Add undiluted cream of mushroom soup and mix well.
  4. Add American cheese; heat and stir until melted.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the cooked cabbage.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Pour mixture into a 2-quart casserole dish.
  8. Brown 1/2 cup dry bread crumbs in 1 tablespoon margarine.
  9. Sprinkle browned bread crumbs on top of the casserole.
  10. Bake uncovered at 350°F for 20 to 30 minutes.
