Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 2/3 cup butter or oleo
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

Instructions

  1. Line an 8-inch square pan with foil, letting the foil extend 2 inches above the sides.
  2. Grease the foil lightly.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter or oleo over medium heat.
  4. Add the packed brown sugar and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture is smooth and slightly thickened.
  5. Stir in the sweetened condensed milk and continue cooking, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches soft ball stage (about 236°F or 113°C).
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Fold in the chopped walnuts.
  8. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  9. Cool at room temperature until set, then cut into squares.
