Ingredients

  • 2 cups strawberry halves
  • 2 kiwi fruit (optional)
  • 1 cantaloupe
  • 2 peaches

Instructions

  1. Cut the top third lengthwise from the watermelon; cover and refrigerate to use as desired.
  2. Scoop balls from the larger section of the watermelon.

  4. Scoop remaining pulp from the watermelon with a large spoon to form a shell. Cut a scalloped or saw-toothed decorative edge on the shell.

  6. Scoop melon balls from cantaloupe and honeydew.
  7. Mix together the melon balls, cover and refrigerate. Slice peaches just before serving.
  8. Drain the melon balls.
  9. Mix all fruit into the watermelon shell and garnish with mint if desired. Serve immediately.

Tips & Substitutions

To enhance the flavor of your Watermelon Fruit Boat, consider adding a splash of lime juice to the mixed fruit for a zesty kick. You can substitute any seasonal fruits you have on hand, such as blueberries or raspberries, for the strawberries or grapes. For added sweetness, a drizzle of honey can be mixed in as well. Ensure all fruits are ripe for the best taste.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Watermelon Fruit Boat as a refreshing centerpiece at summer gatherings or picnics. It pairs beautifully with dishes like the Summertime Strawberry Cake or light grilled meats. For a complete meal, consider offering a side of Zella's Sweet Pickles from Dill Pickles for a tangy contrast, or a light salad for a balanced plate.

Storage & Reheating

Leftover mixed fruit can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Avoid freezing as the texture will change. If you have remaining watermelon shell, keep it wrapped to maintain freshness, but it's best enjoyed immediately as the moisture can make it soggy over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the fruit boat ahead of time?

While you can prepare the watermelon shell and scoop out the fruit a few hours in advance, it's best to assemble the fruit salad right before serving to prevent the fruits from becoming soggy. If you need to prepare earlier, keep the components separate and mix them just before serving.

What other fruits can I include?

You can customize your Watermelon Fruit Boat with any fruits you enjoy or have on hand. Consider adding blueberries, raspberries, or even citrus segments like oranges or mandarins for a pop of flavor. Just ensure the fruits are fresh and complement each other in taste and texture.

Is there a way to make this recipe healthier?

To make your Watermelon Fruit Boat healthier, you can skip the optional added sugars and focus on using fresh, seasonal fruits. Adding chia seeds or nuts can provide a nutritious crunch, and using organic fruits can enhance the overall healthiness of the dish. This recipe naturally fits into vegan recipes as well.
