Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 pint warm water
  • 1 cake yeast or 2 packages dried yeast
  • 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 6 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 cup powdered milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar, yeast, and warm water; let stand for 10 minutes.
  2. Sift dry ingredients (flour, salt, powdered milk, baking powder) together.
  3. Add shortening and cut into the flour mixture until crumbly.
  4. Add the yeast mixture and mix well to form dough.
  5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut with a biscuit cutter.
  6. Let the biscuits rise for 30 to 45 minutes.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
