Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 1 1/3 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups white flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • whites of 3 eggs

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. Sift the white flour with baking powder and salt.
  3. Add the sifted dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with the milk, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Fold in the well-beaten egg whites gently until just incorporated.
  6. Pour the batter into well-greased and floured layer pans.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
