Ingredients

  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 3 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening and sugar together in a bowl.
  2. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Add half the flour and half the milk to the mixture and mix well.
  4. Add the remaining flour and milk, then mix thoroughly.
  5. Stir in vanilla extract.
  6. Grease and flour the cake pans using butter.
  7. Pour 2 or 3 tablespoons of batter into each pan, enough to cover the bottom, forming thin layers.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) until the layers are dry, about 15-20 minutes.
  9. Place 2 or 3 layers at a time on oven racks for baking.
  10. Do not wash the pans between baking layers; wipe with paper towels and re-grease.
  11. Once the layers are baked and cooled, spread chocolate filling over each layer as they are finished.
