Ingredients

  • 1 cup corn syrup
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon Crisco
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions

  1. Put corn syrup, cold water, salt, ground cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg into a saucepan and cook for 3 minutes.
  2. After it comes to a boil, add the Crisco and stir until melted.
  3. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then add the baking soda dissolved in a little hot water and stir well.
  4. Add the flour and baking powder to the mixture and stir until well combined.
  5. Pour into a greased baking pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 30-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
