Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. pitted dates
  • 1 lb. dried figs (no stems)
  • 1 lb. seedless raisins
  • 1 lb. pecans
  • 1/2 lb. crystallized ginger or candied orange peel
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp. lemon juice (optional)
  • confectioners sugar

Instructions

  1. Put through the coarsest cutter of a meat grinder the dates, figs, raisins, pecans, and ginger or orange peel.
  2. If the mixture is very stiff, add the needed lemon juice to soften it.
  3. Shape the mixture into balls, centers for dipping, or form into a roll to be sliced.
  4. Coat with confectioners sugar and wrap in foil.

Tips & Substitutions

For a healthier twist, consider substituting walnuts for pecans or using dried apricots instead of figs. If the mixture is too sticky, lightly dust your hands with confectioners sugar before shaping. You can also experiment with spices like cinnamon or nutmeg for added flavor. If you prefer a vegan version, ensure the crystallized ginger or candied peel is free from animal products.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover Yum-Yum balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. If you've made a roll, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap before placing it in the container. These treats can be enjoyed cold or at room temperature; there's no need to reheat them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh fruits instead of dried ones?

Using fresh fruits is not recommended, as they contain too much moisture and will affect the consistency of the mixture. Dried fruits provide the right texture and sweetness needed for this recipe.

How can I make these more visually appealing?

To enhance presentation, consider drizzling melted dark chocolate over the shaped balls or rolls. You could also sprinkle chopped nuts or coconut flakes on top before the confectioners sugar coating for added color and texture.

Is it possible to make this recipe nut-free?

Yes, you can substitute the pecans with seeds like sunflower or pumpkin seeds to make a nut-free version. Just be sure to adjust the texture accordingly, as seeds may not grind as smoothly as nuts.
