Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 2 Tbsp Crisco
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 3 tsp salt
  • 2 packages yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 5 to 6 cups flour
  • 2 cups boiling water

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Combine cornmeal, Crisco, molasses, and salt in a mixing bowl.
  3. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over the mixture and let it cool.
  4. Dissolve the yeast in 1/2 cup warm water.
  5. Pour the yeast mixture into the cooled mixture and add flour until the dough forms a ball.
  6. Knead the dough for 8 minutes.
  7. Place the dough in a greased bowl, let it double in size.
  8. Punch down the dough, then let it rise again for 1 hour.
  9. Bake the bread for 30 minutes.
