Ingredients

  • 1 package yeast
  • 5 Tbsp lukewarm water
  • 3/4 cup Crisco shortening
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water; set aside.
  2. Blend Crisco shortening with dry ingredients using a pastry cutter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Combine the yeast mixture with buttermilk in a separate bowl.
  4. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing until a stiff dough forms.
  5. Place the dough in a covered container and store in the refrigerator.
  6. Pinch off portions of dough as needed for baking.
  7. Place biscuits on a cookie sheet in a cold oven, then turn the oven to 450°F.
  8. As the oven warms, biscuits will rise and bake until golden.
  9. Dough can be kept in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 weeks.
