Ingredients

  • 1 cup molasses
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 cup melted shortening
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Combine molasses, beaten eggs, and sugar in a mixing bowl.
  2. Sift together flour, soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, ground cloves, and ginger.
  3. Gradually add dry ingredients to the molasses mixture and mix well.
  4. Stir in melted shortening until fully incorporated.
  5. Add hot water last and mix until smooth.
  6. Pour batter into a greased and floured 9 x 9-inch pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
