Ingredients

  • 5 egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 tablespoon gelatin
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon extract
  • 1 pint whipping cream
  • 1 angel food cake

Instructions

  1. Mix egg yolks, sugar, flour, and milk; cook over low heat until thickened.
  2. Prepare gelatin by dissolving it in cold water.
  3. Add dissolved gelatin to the hot mixture and stir well.
  4. Allow the mixture to cool, then add vanilla, lemon extract, and whipped cream.
  5. Cut the angel food cake in half horizontally.
  6. Spread the custard mixture between the cake halves and over the top as if icing.
  7. Refrigerate the assembled cake overnight.
  8. Serve plain or sprinkled with coconut.
