Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 3 cups apples, sliced
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  2. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Mix the egg yolk and milk together, then bind the flour mixture with this wet mixture.
  4. Press the dough into the bottom of an 8x8 or 7x10 inch baking pan.
  5. Core and slice the apples, then arrange them on top of the dough in the pan.
  6. Sprinkle the additional sugar evenly over the apples.
  7. Bake at 375°F for 50 minutes or until golden and cooked through.
