Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 large apple
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup nuts
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
  2. Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Beat sugar and shortening until fluffy.
  4. Beat in egg and vanilla until well mixed.
  5. Peel and core the apple, then chop.
  6. Stir half of the flour mixture into the sugar mixture.
  7. Stir in sour cream.
  8. Add remaining flour mixture and chopped apple; mix well.
  9. Spread the batter in the prepared pan.
  10. Crush nuts and mix with brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon to make topping.
  11. Sprinkle the nut mixture over the batter.
  12. Bake in a 375°F oven for 25 to 30 minutes until golden and cooked through.
