Ingredients

  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 c. tart applesauce
  • 1/4 c. grated American cheese
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. cold shortening
  • 1/4 c. thick sour cream

Instructions

  1. Sift dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening; combine egg, applesauce, and sour cream. Add to dry ingredients and mix quickly.
  2. Turn out onto a floured board and knead lightly for a few seconds.
  3. Roll out to 1/2-inch thickness; cut into 2-inch biscuits. Place on a baking sheet.
  4. Sprinkle grated cheese on top of the biscuits.
  5. Bake in a hot oven (400°F) for 15 minutes.
