Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 cup nutmeats

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 15 1/2 x 10 1/2-inch cookie sheet or cake pan.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sifted flour, soda, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves.
  4. Add the shortening, applesauce, raisins, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and nutmeats to the dry ingredients.
  5. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven until done, about 30 minutes.
  8. Allow to cool before cutting into squares and serving.
