Ingredients

  • 5 cups sliced tart apples
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • pastry for double crust

Instructions

  1. Mix sliced tart apples, brown sugar, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Cover and cook slowly until apples are just tender, about 7 to 8 minutes.
  2. Blend flour and granulated sugar together.
  3. Add the flour and sugar mixture to the cooked apples.
  4. Cook uncovered, stirring, until the syrup thickens, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
  5. Add vanilla, salt, and butter to the apple mixture and stir until well combined. Cool the filling.
  6. Pour the cooled apple filling into a pastry-lined pie pan.
  7. Cover with a top crust that has slits cut in it, then seal and flute the edges.
  8. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 40 to 45 minutes or until the crust is nicely browned.
