Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
  • 2 cakes yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 5 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Add the solid vegetable shortening to the scalded milk and mix well.
  2. Dissolve the yeast cakes in warm water and add to the milk mixture.
  3. Add the slightly beaten egg, salt, flour, and 1/2 cup of sugar to the yeast mixture.
  4. Mix all ingredients thoroughly until well combined.
  5. Allow the dough to rise until doubled in bulk, about 2 hours.
  6. Shape the dough into cloverleaf or desired shapes, using melted butter in forming the rolls.
  7. Let the shaped rolls rise until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes to an hour.
  8. Bake the rolls in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 10 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
