Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup margarine or liquid shortening
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix the ingredients in order: sugar, margarine or liquid shortening, milk, baking powder, egg, salt, and flour.
  2. Pour the batter into an 8 x 8-inch greased baking pan.
  3. Sprinkle sugar evenly on top until it does not get damp from the batter, then add cinnamon to taste.
  4. Bake in a 425°F oven for 20 minutes.
  5. If you double the recipe, bake for an additional 3 to 5 minutes.
  6. Barbara recommends not overbaking to keep the cake moist.
