Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsulphured molasses
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/3 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2/3 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2/3 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter, then slowly add the sugar and beat until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Blend in the molasses.
  4. Sift together the flour, soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  5. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 13 x 9-inch pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
