Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 packages Red Star yeast
  • 2 to 3 cups grated Cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese
  • 6 3/4 to 7 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup soft butter

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk until it is lukewarm, then combine with sugar, salt, eggs, and yeast in a large bowl.
  2. Allow the yeast to activate, about 5-10 minutes, until bubbly.
  3. Gradually add flour and softened butter to the mixture, kneading until a smooth, elastic dough forms.
  4. Fold in the grated cheese until evenly distributed.
  5. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Divide the dough into portions and braid each portion as desired.
  8. Place the braids on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Remove from oven and cool slightly before serving.
