Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup baking molasses
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Combine sugar, flour, salt, soda, ground cinnamon, and ground ginger in a bowl.
  2. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles pie mix.
  3. Stir in the molasses and the beaten egg until well blended.
  4. Shape the dough into two rolls in floured wax paper.
  5. Refrigerate the rolls until firm.
  6. Slice each roll into 1/4-inch thick slices and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  7. Sprinkle the top of each cookie with additional sugar.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes until golden.
