Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sour milk
  • 2 teaspoons soda in milk
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa in flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup lard
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup water from raisins
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3 1/2 cups sifted flour

Instructions

  1. Add 3 1/2 cups of sifted flour to the mixture.
  2. Combine sugar, eggs, and shortening until smooth.
  3. Mix in sour milk, boiling water, vanilla, and nutmeg.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together cocoa, remaining flour, salt, and soda in milk.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing well.
  6. Pour batter into a greased cake pan.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow to cool before frosting or serving.
